When my mother’s cat was put down we were surprised a few days later when we received a note from the ASPCA that a gift had been made in honor of Sophie (the cat). The gift was so thoughtful and really meant a lot to us.

  3. I think a memorial garden stone is a nice gift, especially if the pet was cremated or buried. The stone can be used to signify where the ashes were released. The stone can also be put on a special spot of the pets (like under a tree or near a favorite play spot.)

Another nice gift may be a flower or plant that comes up every year, as this can be added to a garden or near a favorite place of the pet’s outside. (I personally have three different day lily flowers for pets that we have lost in a special garden in my yard, along with garden stones.)

Just this last week my neighbor’s lost a pet, and I gave them a stone that had a saying about “paw prints on our heart.”

Whatever you decide to give, whether a card or hug, the important thing is to acknowledge the loss in a caring and thoughtful manner.
